United Nations Security Council

United Nations Security Council is the most important organ of United Nations which deals with the maintenance of international peace and security. Its power include the establishment of peacemaking operations, the establishment of international sanctions, and the authorization of military action. 

The first session of Security Council was held on 17 January, 1946 at Church House, London

The Security Council consists of 2 types of members- Permanent Members & Non-Permanent Members. There are 5 permanent members of the Security Council & 10 non-permanent members with 2 year terms. 5 permanent members are France, China, Russia, UK and US.

The role of president of the Security Council involves setting the agenda, presiding at its meetings and overseeing any crisis. The presidency rotates monthly in alphabetically order of the Security Council member nations' names in English & is currently held by Germany for July 2011.

Veto Power, is the power which is given to the 5 permanent members of the Security Council by the virtue of which a negative vote, or veto, by a permanent member prevents adoption of the proposal, even ifit has recieved the required no. of affirmative votes (9).
